Reprinted in the latest volume of YEAR’S BEST DARK FANTASY & HORROR (Prime, 2019) is my story, “In This Twilight”, the lead story in my collection, NOTHING IS EVERYTHING.
“In This Twilight” takes its title from a Nine Inch Nails song, and its inspiration from my time at school, an early 2000s film, and Angela of Foligno. A strange mix, but one that I think works as the introduction to the stories in that collection, and a review of what it’s like to be young and finding yourself.
The first half of the story was written many years ago and languished in a folder on my hard drive, waiting for an ending. It’s like that sometimes: a great premise peters out before it gets to where it needs to go, and it’s only after you’ve lived more life that the solution presents itself. I have other stories in a similar state, all waiting for their endings to be revealed. I just hope I get to them all while I’m still able.
